$100K Award In Brookhaven's Condemnation Of Mt. Sinai Home: Report

The renter's home was condemned after his son was charged with weapon possession, Newsday reported.

MOUNT SINAI, NY — A former Mount Sinai man, who filed a federal civil rights lawsuit claiming he lost his home to condemnation after his son was charged with weapon possession, has been awarded $100,001, Newsday reported.

Edward Perkowski Sr., 73, now a resident of Pennsylvania, sued, saying he was forced to leave the home he rented after the 2016 arrest of his son, Edward Perkowski Jr., who was later acquitted, the outlet reported.

Jurors found Brookhaven Town unlawfully entered and condemned the Miller Place-Middle Island Road house and awarded the elder Perkowski $100,000 for the unlawful condemnation count and $1 for the unlawful entry count, according to the outlet.

In a statement released by his lawyer to Newsday, Perkowski said: "I'm happy that a jury agreed with me that Brookhaven had no right to enter my home or to condemn it. I'll finally get compensated for their wrongdoing."

Patch has reached out to Brookhaven for comment.
