After 25 Years, Message Released on Port Jeff Beach Comes Home

Mother and daughter sent off postcard tied to a balloon.

Messages in a bottle are a time honored way of sending off a note into the world to see how far it will go to get a response. In a variation on the theme, a woman and her young daughter tied a postcard to a helium ballooon and sent it off into the big blue yonder from in Port Jefferson back in the summer of 1984. According to a story in The Port Times Record, that postcard was returned 25 years later, a little longer than they expected.

"In 2009, a neighbor delivered an envelope to Linda Gessner's new address, about a block away from her old home," the paper reported. "Inside she found the creased and torn postcard of the the Grand Republic with her daughter's early handwriting on the other side. The message was in her hands again."
