Fundraiser Takes the Cake in Mt. Sinai For ALS Care

After ruling out every other possibility, doctors diagnosed Doug Pendrell with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis last year. ALS – the neurological disease that took the life of Yankee legend Lou Gehrig over 70 years ago whose name the illness now bears – still has no treatment and no cure.

Pendrell's neice, Kristy Bohne, a Mt. Sinai resident, helped to start a team to raise money at the Walk to Defeat ALS, an annual event held at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow that benefits The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter.

The non-profit provides patient services in the form of assistive technology equipment to those with the disease and a Certified ALS Center that is run out of Stony Brook Hospital. It also funds research into a treatment and a possible cure for ALS.

Last year, Bohne and her cousin Lisa Sandoval organized fundraisers and events to support their Walk to Defeat ALS team, taking part in the event for the first time.

This year, they hope to do more.

On Saturday, Bohne held a Texas Hold ‘Em tournament to raise money for her team called "Team Doug-Out" raising about $800 toward the team's total goal of $5,000.

Bohne said that her uncle has already benfitted from The ALS Association's services.

"Team Doug-Out" will be walking on Sept. 29 at the Long Island Walk to Defeat ALS.
