Do you need to Dump the Junk?

The Port Jefferson Free Library is hosting a "Dump The Junk" event on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for people to dispose of unused and expired medications and recyclables.

The event, which is being held in the library's parking lot, is being co-hosted by the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office, Eco-Tech Management and Smart Shred Mobile.

The sheriff's office will be collecting unwanted medications and covered hypodermic needles, as well as liquids, which they ask are dumped into cat litter before dropping off.

"Safe disposal of these medications and needles will help protect the environment and eliminate the risk of getting into the hands of those who may misuse them," according to an event flyer.

Eco-Tech Management will be collecting old, used, broken, working or nonworking electronics. According to the library, most electronics are accepted, such as computers, cell phones, printers, TVs,

keyboards, cables, wires, circuit boards, and stereos.

However, they will not be accepting large appliances, microwaves, fluorescent bulbs, and alkaline batteries.

In addition, Smart Shred Mobile will supply a shredding truck safely disposing of documents.
