Collaboration Is Key For Student Scientists In Port Jefferson
Middle schoolers took part in team-building activities upon returning to school.

Port Jefferson Middle School teacher Michelle Landetta knows how to use the facets of teamwork to encourage her students to learn the skills to become successful scientists. Landetta tasked students in her two science classes to participate in several team-building activities to get them motivated and excited about being back at school.

One group of students were involved in a marble relay using various tools –
plastic containers, spoons and cups – to successfully pass the marble to the person next to them. Another inventive project had students working to figure out how to get a gummy worm into a lifesaver with an overturned plastic cup serving as a boat, using only paper clips.
“The activities allowed the students to communicate with one another, problem-solve together, support each other’s efforts and get to know each other,” she said.
