Police: No Foul Play in Death of Man Found in Port Jefferson Station Woods

Police say cause of death was possibly natural causes.

UPDATED 6:33 p.m. – Police have said that the dead man a utility worker found behind on Tuesday evening probably died of natural causes or from a drug overdose.

"The cause of death was non criminal," said a police spokesperson over the phone.

The worker who was still at the scene but wished not to be identified said that at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday he came across a man lying in the woods while he was performing a routine inspection.

“He looked like he was just taking a nap,” he said.

The man had packages near him that could have been purchased from Meat Farms and he might have been eating lunch just before he died because there was lunch meat and bread nearby, according to the worker.

"It didn't look like anything dramatic happened," he said.

When asked if he might have been a homeless person, the utility worker said that he didn’t think so and that the dead man had a duffle bag and a backpack with him.

After the discovery, the worker immediately left the area and called police.

“I didn’t want to disturb anything,” he said.

A Suffolk County Police crime scene van was at the location at 6:30 p.m. as was someone from the medical examiner's office.

The man who discovered the body is actually the second utility worker to make such a gruesome discovery in the past month. On March 20, . That worker had been trimming trees in the area when he found the deceased.
