Explore Little Tech With The Little Ones During Spring Break

Maritime Explorium in Port Jefferson open for kids to discover nanotechnology.

Looking for a little something to do this week with the little ones while they’re on spring break? Port Jefferson’s is open every day with a spcial exhibit on nanotechnology, the science of the very, very, very small. (Did we mention it’s really tiny science?)

From 1 to 5 p.m. parents can take the kids to the museum located in the refurbished for the hands on exhibit. Kids (and curious parents) can find out how nanotechnology is changing the way we live and explore how it works.

According to nano.gov, nanotechnology is the “understanding and control of matter at the nanoscale, at dimensions between approximately 1 and 100 nanometers.”

Just how small is that? According to the nano.gov website, there are 25,400,000 nanometers in an inch and a sheet of newspaper is about 100,000 nanometers thick. In comparison, if a marble were a nanometer, then one meter would be the size of the whole Earth.

In one report, scientists had discovered a way to make miniature parts of machinery out of DNA. Are miniature robots next?
