Revenue Questions Loom Over Upcoming Village Budget

As Port Jefferson Village officials work on crafting a budget for the upcoming fiscal year, Treasurer Don Pearce reported on Monday night that while increases in spending shouldn't be too much of a problem, the revenue side of the equation could prove to be quite a challenge.

Pearce and Village Board members discussed a preliminary budget proposal on Monday night at a work session, after the treasurer had discussed with department heads what would be necessary in next year's spending plan.

Board Puts Parking Meter Vote in Neutral

Village officials opted Monday night to forgo voting on a measure to change a parking policy that had been the topic of much debate one week prior in Village Hall, deciding instead to run some ideas by the village's Parking Committee before considering a change.

Last Monday members of the village restaurant and bar industry showed up at a Village Board meeting to express their disapproval with a new policy – suggested by the Parking Committee and subsequently adopted by the Village Board in February – that will require village visitors to pay for parking between the hours of 10 p.m. and midnight, a two-hour extension of previous policy.

Port Jefferson School Board Paves the Way for Closed Campus Policy

Paving the way The Port Jefferson Board of Education on Tuesday voted to approve a first reading of a policy that would close the high school campus for seniors, according to a report published Wednesday in The Port Times Record.

"This [measure] is something we discussed as an administrative team in our entirety and there was unilateral support from the district for moving in this direction," Superintendent Ken Bossert said. "I would rather do it proactively than in response to a student tragedy."
