Port Jeff’s “Baker’s Alley” May Rise Again

A plan to develop a walking path in the dirt floor alleyway that cuts between East Main Street and the parking lot behind the off of East Broadway is in place, according to a story in The Port Times Record.

Now they just need the funding.

According to a report written by Brittany Wait for The Port Times Record, members of the community have been advocating for the alley to be made accessible to shoppers for years.

"It makes so much sense to have a direct path to the lower streets and link parking," Stacey Davidson is quoted as saying in the story.

Davidson’s store, at 126 East Main Street, is next to the pathway on one side. According to the Port Jefferson village historical website, the building on the other side of Baker’s Alley at 128 East Main Street used to house the Colonial Shoppe, an antiques store. Not too far from those days, the building is now a consignment shop called .

It was at one time, as the name of the alleyway suggests, a bakery.

“The passway to the left of the store is known locally as Baker’s Alley since the building once housed William West’s New England Bakery,” reads the caption to an undated photo of the building.

Trustee Adrienne Kessel told Patch in an email that the conceptual plan was developed by Judy Ogden of Ogden's Design and Planting in St. James in conjunction with the village’s Beautification Committee.
