Port Jeff Student-Athletes Earn All-State, All-Long Island Honors

Two swimmers, a volleyball player and a quarterback were recognized for their accomplishments in the pool and on the court and gridiron.

Four student athletes at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School earned All-State and All-Long Island honors for their performances in swimming, volleyball and football during the fall season.

Kate Sommerstad was awarded All-Long Island and All-State honors for girls swimming based on her season best times and performance in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association swim championships in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Sommerstad Kate finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle and third in the 500-meter freestyle at the state championships.

Olivia Schlegel also received All-State honors for girls swimming based on her performance in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke at the NYSPHSAA swim championships. Schlegel finished seventh in the 200 IM and 15th in the 100 backstroke at the state championships.

Alexa Ayotte was awarded Fourth Team All-State honors by the New York Volleyball Coaches Association. Ayotte had 55 kills, 281 assists, 18 blocks, 75 digs and 25 aces on the season and helped lead the team to the Suffolk County Championship game.

Luke Filippi was awarded Second Team All-Long Island Quarterback honors by Newsday. Luke totaled 1,603 yards and 19 touchdowns on the season both running and throwing for the Royals. Filippi was also recognized as a tremendous leader on the defensive side of the ball.

“To be selected as one of the top student-athletes throughout all of Long Island and New York State is an outstanding achievement,” District Athletic Director Adam Sherrard said in a statement. “All four of these student-athletes put work in year-round to help improve their fitness and skill level to perform at their absolute best and to earn these postseason honors. I am extremely proud to have them represent the Port Jefferson athletic program.”
