Port Jefferson Students Serve As Environmental Stewards

There is something extra special about being a part of the Port Jefferson School District, and members of three of the service clubs took that pride into the local community. The district’s Environmental Club, Interact Club and Leo Club joined forces for two local beach cleanup days at local beaches.

“The event was well regarded as a way to encourage more leadership roles in the community, sharing pride and responsibility as well as a greater understanding of local environmental issues,” said Mr. Brian Chalmers, who co-chairs the Leo Club with librarian Ms. Eva Grasso.

The community service event was sponsored by the Village of Port Jefferson and The Coastal Steward “Adopt a Beach Program.” The students worked at McAllister Park in Belle Terre and then at Crystal Brook Beach in Port Jefferson. They worked together and collected various debris and discussed the source of debris found. In addition to Chalmers and Grasso, the students were joined by Interact Club adviser Deirdre Filippi and Environmental Club adviser Jonathan Maletta.
