Cooling Centers To Open In North Hempstead Amid Sizzling Temps
Multiple cooling centers will be open to residents looking to escape the extreme summer heat. Here's where you can find them.
PORT WASHINGTON, NY — A number of cooling centers will be open in North Hempstead for those looking to escape the extreme summer heat.
The cooling sites will be open on Wednesday, Aug. 11 to Friday, Aug. 13 — and will offer residents air conditioning, cold water, and a place to relax while they avoid temperatures in the 90s. Masks will be required indoors, according to Town officials.

- "Yes We Can" Community Center (141 Garden St., Westbury) — 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Michael J. Tully Park (1801 Evergreen Ave., New Hyde Park) — 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Port Washington Senior Center (80 Manorhaven Blvd., Port Washington) — 12 to 8 p.m.

- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing that is both loose and absorbent (cotton is a good choice)
- Eat fruits and vegetables
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat when venturing outdoors
- Take cool baths/showers once or twice a day
- Limit their intake of caffeine and alcoholic beverages
- Check the daily heat index to alert them to the risk of heat-related illness
