PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Four members of a family of five were injured Friday afternoon after a Four Winns boat exploded shortly after it was started in the Long Island Sound at Kings Point, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
According to police, the father started the boat around 4:15 p.m. Moments later his 41-year-old wife, who was operating the boat, his 5-year-old son, and his 11-year-old daughter — all of whom were believed to be on the boat at the time of the explosion — were ejected into the water.
The 5-year-old suffered a leg and arm injury, the daughter had cuts and bruises, the mother’s hand was burnt and she also had injuries to her legs and back, and the father had leg abrasions, according to the report.

The eldest child, a 13-year-old boy, was on a jet ski within the vicinity of the boat when it exploded and immediately went to help rescue his family members, said police.
The father was able to get his wife and youngest child to shore on the jet ski and employees from the Steppingstone Marina removed the other children from the bow of the boat, the report said.
