ICYMI: Port Washington School District Bond Vote is Tuesday

On Tuesday, March 10, 2015 community residents will have an opportunity to vote on the Port Washington School District proposed capital project bond referendum. Voting will take place at Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School located on Port Washington Boulevard from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

An approved bond will support new construction, renovations and repairs district wide to address the needs of today’s students, the district’s growing enrollment, a more rigorous and competitive curriculum and the board of education and administration’s education vision for the future.

The bond referendum proposes capital projects totaling $69,877,198. The district will be eligible for approximately 18.5 percent in New York State Building Aid. The cost to the average homeowner will be approximately $106 per year, or $8.83 per month, from 2015-2023. After that, there will be no additional increase because the 2001 construction bond will be fully paid and the debt for this bond will replace it, having a neutral tax impact starting in 2023 and beyond.

Approximately $50 million of the proposed bond will fund new construction and major renovations to increase instructional space, auditorium renovations, upgrades to the science labs at Paul D. Schreiber High School and Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School, new science labs at each elementary school, music room renovations, replacement of all classroom portables with permanent structures, installation of air conditioning in one common location in each school, installation of two multipurpose athletic fields and improvements in technology and security.

The remaining amount of the proposed bond will support needed repairs and renovations to bathrooms, windows, floors, ceilings, parking lots, doors and HVAC.
