For Kids by Kids: Public Speaking

The Port Washington Public Library will be hosting a public speaking workshop for kids in grades 3-6 on January 28.

A quick Google search reveals statistics and graphs reporting that public speaking is among the most common fears, and growing up, I was well-familiar with that dreadful feeling before a presentation. Developing this skill, however, has been a defining aspect of my high school experience, manifesting itself as I discussed my research in a room full of judges, contributed to “fishbowl” talks in English, and tried out for the debate team. That is why Schreiber students Sadie and Dylan dreamt up the For Kids by Kids: Public Speaking event: to help kids cultivate the skill of public speaking in a fun, unique way

Here, participants will practice speaking in front of a crowd reading speeches prepared by the organizers, ranging from topics such as what makes an animal special to baseball. For example, one of the sample speeches reads:

"Folks, let's talk about the magic of baseball for our youngsters. Baseball isn't just a game; it's a symphony of teamwork, discipline, and sheer joy. Picture a sunlit afternoon, the crack of the bat, and the cheers from the stands – that's the soundtrack of childhood memories being made. In this field of dreams, kids learn the thrill of competition, the camaraderie of teammates, and the resilience to bounce back from a strikeout. Baseball instills life lessons wrapped in the delight of running bases and catching pop flies. So, let's celebrate the joys of baseball, where every pitch is a chance for a home run and every game, a chapter in the adventure of growing up."

Even for those comfortable with talking in front of others, Sadie and Dylan believe public speaking is a skill that everyone can improve on. For those just starting out with public speaking, Sadie’s advice is to “begin with practicing by talking about something that you’re passionate about in front of a smaller crowd, it can even be in front of stuffed animals in your room.”

The For Kids by Kids: Public Speaking workshop will be running on January 28 in the Port Washington Public Library and is open to grades 3-6. Be sure to sign up soon — spots are quickly filling up!
