$90K Minimum Salary Needed For 'Affordable' Crown Heights Homes

Households bringing in less than $90,000 a year cannot apply for these affordable Crown Heights homes.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN -- The minimum salary to apply for a new batch of affordable Crown Heights homes is more than $90,000, city records show.

Three two-bedroom apartments at 797 Sterling Place hit the NYC Housing Connect lotto Tuesday, but are only available to people earning between $91,406 and $146,510 a year.

The $2,666-per-month apartments became available through the Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program, which provides zoning allowances to developments with a percentage of affordably priced units.

But a recent report from City Comptroller Scott Stringer's office found the program has created just 31,500 affordable homes for low-income New Yorkers while more than 166,000 units go to people earning about $75,120 a year.

Patch's monthly series on the affordable housing program in Brooklyn shows salary demands in gentrifying neighborhoods are often set above the area median income. None of the 54 apartments listed in Crown Heights last month were available to people earning less than 130 percent AMI.
