Affordable Crown Heights Apartments Hit Housing Lotto

There are 29 affordable apartment ups for grabs at the site of the now-demolished Fox Savoy Theater, records show.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Affordable apartments are up for grabs in a new building that went up after a historic theater was demolished, city records and reports.

Twenty-nine apartments, half of which cost less than $1,000-per-month, are up for grabs through NYC Housing Connect at 1511 Bedford Ave., the former home of the Fox Savoy Theater, records show.

The new 10-story building stands on a lot that was once home to the neo-classical movie house, designed by Isaac Lamb in 1926, which developers Realty Within Reach tore down in 2014, city records show.

Developers bought the Fox Savoy Theater building from a church for just $575,000 in 2012, Brownstoner reported.

Now a 114-unit complex stands on the lot and 25 percent of the apartments are affordably priced.

The eight studios, seven one-bedrooms and 14 two-bedrooms will be available until Aug. 27 to applicants who meet specific income requirements.

Studio apartments that cost $816-per-month are available to people with an annual income between $30,480 and $43,860.

One-bedrooms that cost $877-per-month are available to households of up to two people with a combined annual income between $32,675 and $50,100.

And three-bedrooms that cost $1,064-per-month are available to households with an annual income between $39,120 and $62,580.

Building amenities include parking spaces, a roof deck, gym, recreation room and bike storage, records show.
