Atlantic Yards' Modular Condos Are a Mess: Report

The modules within a new record-breaking tower in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, don't seem to fit together quite right.

Wondering why construction on the “historic” 32-story modular tower at the Atlantic Yards site, now known as Pacific Park, has been taking literally forever?

An exhaustive — and a little exhausting — report posted Sunday by City Limits, an investigative NYC news nonprofit, may give you some insight.

(If you’re confused already, here’s a quick primer. Modulars are, by definition, little rooms constructed off-site, piece by piece — then stacked on top of each other back at the construction site, like puzzle pieces. In the case of Atlantic Yards/Pacific Park, the gigantic development going in next to Barclays Center in Prospect Heights, developers plan to stack modular condos together in a residential tower called “B2” until the tower is 32 stories tall. This process, on top of being historic, was supposed to save time and lower costs. The project is now reportedly years off schedule and millions of dollars over budget.)

What City Limits claimed on Sunday, based on documents requested via the state’s freedom of information law, is that B2 is a total mess. Its modules are leaking like crazy, the report says, and are “visibly misaligned,” besides.

It’s a long read, but if you want to stay up to date on the leaning tower of mods reportedly being erected over Prospect Heights, we recommend you take a deep breath, summon your inner NIMBY and dive in.
