ICYMI: Cherry Blossoms Start To Bloom At Brooklyn Botanic Garden
The unofficial start to spring is under way.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Finally, the winter gloom is being chased out of Brooklyn.
In what's unofficially seen as the arrival of warmer weather, the borough's stunning cherry blossoms are starting to bloom.
The first trees have started to burst into flower at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Two of the trees bloomed Wednesday, and eight were in bloom by Saturday.

Though Lucy Gardner, a spokeswoman for the Prospect Park Alliance, said that park's cherry trees have yet to flower, they're never far behind their neighbor across Flatbush Avenue.

The Botanic Garden's "Cherrywatch" tracker updates once a day with the latest information on the bloom status of cherry trees within its borders. The tracker has gained somewhat of a cult following for New Yorkers tired of the cold and eager for the start of spring.

This year's trackers were treated to an early bloom for the second year in a row.
Last year's first blooms appeared on March 16. Brooklynites might have been treated to such an early bloom this year if a mid-March cold snap hadn't brought several inches of snow.
Blooming started on April 10 in 2015 and April 16 in 2014.
