Deadline For Participatory Budgeting Ideas Coming Up

How would you improve the neighborhood?

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — The deadline to submit ideas for participatory budgeting is fast approaching.

The process allows people in communities to submit ideas for projects that could use some funding. Chosen projects are put on a ballot, and people in the area can vote on which projects they think should get the money. Anyone as young as 11 or in the sixth grade can vote as long as they live in the district. Winning projects are funded until money runs out.

The deadline to submit ideas is Oct. 13. City Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo, who represents Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, is reminding people in the area to get them in before it's too late.

The city has set up a handy website that makes it easy for people to submit their ideas and to see what other people think could use some extra cash in the neighborhood.

For example, somebody suggested changing the traffic signal on Vanderbilt Avenue so pedestrians don't have to wait so long to cross.
