The fine folks at Ample Hills Creamery in Prospect Heights were very gracious with me on Tuesday. It was 90 degrees and I had ridden my bike for the better part of an hour, and was dripping on their floor. I was planning to buy a milkshake, but heartbreakingly, their dark chocolate bin was empty.
What to do? Maybe mess around with some new taste sensations. The result? The Mexican Hot Chocolate Milkshake.
The finer points:
Made with Ample Hills' Mexican Hot Chocolate ice cream, this thing has some spicy flakes in it to go along with the dairy. Not a traditional choice, but it's a fun, off-beaten path to eat your way down.
Liked:
The spiciness actually did serve to bring out the chocolate's flavor, which was delicious.
It was cut with a small helping of vanilla bean, which helped put kind of a foggy flavor blanket on the whole thing. Didn't serve to dull the spice of it, but did prevent it from being overpowering.
Didn't like:
The kick did hit me in the back of the throat at times. This forced me to drink even the small size slowly.
Verdict:
Try it, for sure. It's not going to be for everyone, but it cooled me off and smacked around my taste buds, as well, so that worked out great.
