On Saturday, a 16-year-old was killed near a public housing development in Brownsville, according to police.

Four people — including an 8-year-old boy —were then shot late Saturday when two people opened fire into a barbecue at the Stuyvesant Gardens Houses in Bed-Stuy, according to police.

The violent weekend comes as officials work to tamp down a national surge in gun violence, which typically spikes during the summer months in New York City. Shootings citywide showed a 24 percent decrease so far this month compared to last year, though they are still a far cry from pre-pandemic numbers in 2019, according to NYPD data.
