Man Arrested After Woman Found Dead On Crown Heights Sidewalk Wrapped In Bed Sheet

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Thirty-two-year-old James Berry was arrested and charged with murder after a woman was found dead early Thursday morning on a Crown Heights sidewalk wrapped in a bed sheet, the NYPD said.

Officers responded to a call around 1:45 a.m. Thursday morning and found the woman in front of 1635 Union St., near Troy Avenue., police said.

She was "unconscious and unresponsive," police said, and had suffered "trauma to the body." EMS pronounced her dead on the scene.

Berry was taken into custody from the scene, police said, and he was charged with murder in the second degree. The woman was identified as 70-year-old Joyce Spears.

The New York Post reported that Berry is Spears' grandson, and he beat her to death with a dumbell.
