3 Riverhead Teens Searched Vehicles For Valuables, Had Stolen SUV: PD

They were caught in a stolen SUV, trying to open vehicle doors in search of valuables in both Riverhead and on the North Fork, police say.

SOUTH JAMESPORT, NY — Three teens were arrested after they were caught trying to open car doors and search vehicles for valuables, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, on Tuesday at about 3:56 a.m., 911 calls came in from residents in the South Jamesport area; the residents reported that individuals in a white SUV were going onto various properties and attempting to open vehicle doors.

Marked patrols units responded to the area, as well as a K9 officer, and the vehicle was quickly located on 4th Street in Jamesport, police said.

Three male occupants of the vehicle fled from the area on foot but were apprehended a short time later with the assistance of Riverhead Police K9 "Loki," police said.

All three were placed into custody and transported to the Riverhead Police Department, officials said.

The Riverhead Police Department's detective division was notified and responded. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the vehicle involved had been stolen from the Calverton area without the owner's knowledge, police said.

In addition, it was determined that the trio of teens had been going through unlocked vehicles in search of valuables in neighborhoods in the Mattituck, Laurel and Jamesport areas, police said.

Two of the subjects were identified as juveniles, 15 and 17, from the Calverton area; they were placed under arrest and processed on a charge of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a Class D felony, police said. They were held for arraignment at Suffolk County Superior Court, police said.

The third male was identified as Kyle Harris, 18, of Aquebogue, police said. Harris was also placed under arrest and charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, as well as third-degree criminal trespass, a class B misdemeanor, police said.

Harris was held for arraignment at Riverhead Justice Court, police said.

"Residents are reminded to remove all valuables from their vehicles and to lock their doors," police said.
