Here are the top stories in Riverhead today:

  1. Man found with handgun becomes 'combative,' assaults officer. An intoxicated Sagaponack man was arrested after a handgun was found in his vehicle and he became combative and assaulted a police officer early Thursday. Officers woke Errol Gene Scott, 23, who was intoxicated, and were attempting to assist him to move the vehicle, which was impeding traffic, when they located a handgun while trying to find the keys. Officers determined that the handgun was possessed illegally and when they tried to arrest Scott, he became combative, police said.

  3. Where to buy a Christmas tree on the North Fork. What’s that in the air? It’s the scent of fresh pine and happy anticipation that can only mean one thing: It’s time to get that Christmas tree. Here are 12 places on the North Fork where you can buy a fresh, pine-scented Douglas fir and other varieties. There are farms where you can cut your own tree (with the aid of some elves, if desired), garden centers with pretty holiday wreaths and farm stands where you can pick up some holiday treats to go or sip cocoa by a fire pit.
