RIVERHEAD, NY — Long Island had its first taste of Old Man Winter Tuesday — as the first snow fell across the area, accompanied by wind gusts of 51 miles an hour, according to the National Weather Service.

"It was quite a winter-like day out there," Dominic Ramunni, meteorologist for the NWS office in Upton, said. "Long Island had the first flakes of the season."

The "trace" of snow that fell saw no accumulation, he said.

Wind gusts Tuesday reached 40 to 50 miles per hour across Long Island, with a maximum of 51 miles per hour reported at the airport in Islip.

The blustery weather led to some downed tree limbs, Ramunni said.

The peak of the winds are expected Tuesday, but Wednesday and later in the week will remain "gusty," he said. Wednesday's winds are expected to reach 20 to 25 miles per hours. "It will still be pretty blustery out there, " Ramuni said.

Temperatures on Tuesday reached a high of 42 degrees, with a low of 34 degrees; on Wednesday, a low in the 30s will lead to a "rebound," with a high temperature closer to the 50-degree mark, before dropping to around freezing Wednesday night, Ramunni said.
