Gas Truck Engulfed In Flames Shuts Downtown Riverhead Streets: PD

The driver sustained a minor injury, police said.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A gas tanker truck fire shut down streets in Riverhead Sunday night, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, the incident took place at about 6:17 p.m. near East Main Street and Elton Avenue, where the gas truck was engulfed in fire.

Riverhead Police shut down the surrounding area with the assistance of New York State Police and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office.

The Riverhead Volunteer Fire Department responded and was able to extinguish the fire; the driver of the vehicle was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps for a minor injury, police said.

The Riverhead Fire Marshal, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and Suffolk County Police motor carrier were all notified, police said.

East Main Street between Elton Avenue and Hubbard Avenue was shut down for an extended period of time, police said.
