Here are the top stories today in Riverhead:

  1. Riverhead High School may add an alternative high school program that would operate in the afternoon hours. The program to help at-risk students would operate from 3-5 p.m. in the high school building. According to the National Dropout Prevention Center, the alternative school program serves youth in at-risk situations and provides an opportunity for students who are underachieving or lack credits for graduation but still want to stay in school and obtain their diplomas. (Riverhead News Review)
  2. A Flanders man, 30, who overcame many obstacles, is remembered for his positive, uplifting spirit. Victor Irizarry faced no shortage of challenges in his life. Each time, he emerged stronger. While working on his job for Suffolk Excavating, Victor was removing silt from the bottom of a drainage pipe when he collapsed as a result of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning and later died. Victor will be remembered as always being positive and someone who sought a good time.
  3. Five North Fork craft beers getting excited about this holiday season. One great thing about being a craft beer maker is that you get to play in a sandbox of flavor limited only by your imagination. Your favorite candy from childhood? Why not drink it? Pine needles? Yes, please. Coffee grounds? Of course! See the list of some concoctions, all on tap now, that local brewers have created for your holiday celebrations. (Northforker)
