- On Wednesday, the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce honored Riverhead Supervisor Yvette Aguiar with its Supervisor of the Year award at the group’s first Annual Latino Leaders Luncheon. Aguiar gave an inspirational speech about growing up and not speaking English in her early years. She said, "her hard work came to fruition and people are recognizing it". (RiverheadLOCAL)
- Saturday in Farmingdale, the U.S. Army and state elected officials presented thirty Vietnam War veterans from Long Island with commemorative medals to honor for their service. They urged people to never forget the sacrifices they made. The veterans were awarded the medals during a ceremony held at and hosted by the American Airpower Museum.(Subscription: Newsday)
- Mehdi Damaghi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University is taking a different approach to cancer, and it is catching on. Damaghi is taking the same principles of evolutionary biology, understanding how a cancer can adapt and fight to survive. - A Ridge woman charged with driving a bus while intoxicated with Cub Scouts aboard and leaving the scenes of two crashes pleaded guilty Friday to nearly 30 counts of DWI, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said. According to court documents, on July 13, 2021, Diane Juergens, 62, the driver of a school bus transporting children to and from camp, arrived at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp to transport campers home at the end of the day, Tierney said. A total of 10 Cub Scouts, all under the age of 11, were on the bus, along with their camp counselor, Tierney said. (Riverhead Patch)
