Here are the top stories today in Riverhead:
- J. Petrocelli Development Associates will be Riverhead's master developer for the new town square project. The builder has a number of completed major construction and restoration projects under its belt, including the Hyatt Place, Preston House and Hotel, the Long Island Aquarium and East Lawn. The Town Board members will move to designate J. Petrocelli Development Associates as master developer for the project next week. (RiverheadLOCAL)
- New York State approved Plant Connection on Sound Avenue in Riverhead for an adult-use cannabis cultivator license. Adult-use cultivators are prohibited from being licensed as retailers or locations for on-site consumption under the 2021 legislation that legalized recreational marijuana in New York State. A handful of other approvals went to applicants in the NYC-LI region. (RiverheadLOCAL)
- A Department of Environmental Conservation spokesperson confirmed that three owls, an adult great horned owl and two owlets, in Peconic, tested positive for the avian flu, which has been detected in several eastern states so far in 2022 and can be particularly dangerous for livestock. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that the avian flu in birds is not an immediate public health concern. The DEC said the public should report dead ducks, geese, swans, waterbirds (including gulls), raptors, pheasants, turkey and grouse, or any group of five or more dead birds in one area to the regional DEC Wildlife office at wildlife.r1@dec.ny.gov or call 518-478-2203. (Suffolk Times)
- I remember getting ducklings for Easter one year, I was a child and did not know how to care for them. People considering adopting rabbits and chickens need to consider their ability to commit to the care of the animals for years to come — and not just right now, Southampton officials warn. Consider alternates such as chocolate rabbits or stuffed rabbit and chick toys. (Patch)
- Police said they apprehended Shareem Giles, 51, and Saquan Blount, 23, both of Riverhead, for a burlary at 625 East Main St. Any person who may have witnessed, or has information regarding, the incident is asked to contact the Riverhead Police Department's detective division at 631-727-4500. All calls and information will remain confidential. (Riverhead Patch)
