Here are the top stories today in Riverhead:

  1. Overnight fire damages Riverhead self-storage facility. An overnight fire damaged multiple storage units at the CubeSmart self-storage facility on Mill Road in Riverhead. Riverhead Fire Department responded to the 1:49 a.m. alarm and extinguished the fire. Firefighters were working at the scene for two to three hours. There was fire in five units one of the five large metal storage units on the site, located just north of the railroad crossing and adjacent to the Glenwood community. Fire gutted one of the units throughout. (RiverheadLOCAL)
  2. Riverhead supervisor announces mask mandate in town buildings. Riverhead Town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar has instituted a mask mandate in all town buildings. All visitors to town buildings, including Town Hall, are required to wear masks regardless of their vaccination status. All employees are required to social distance and wear masks while not at their workstations. This directive will remain in effect through Jan. 15, when it will be reassessed, Aguiar said.   3. Missing Long Island teens found safe. Both teens were found unharmed in Manhattan Tuesday, Suffolk police said. The NYPD and MTA Police Department assisted in the investigation. (The Patch)
  4. Audit finds Suffolk Probation held onto $1.3 Million in restitution. Suffolk's Probation department officials are unnecessarily holding on to nearly $1.3 million in victim restitution — some collected in the 1980s, according to an audit by the state comptroller's office. In a response to the audit, county officials said that the depth of their response is "significantly compromised" because the probation director who was serving during the audit period is no longer working for the county.
