Taxi Driver Killed in Crash on Long Island Expressway

Police believe the driver may have suffered a medical event before crashing into a tree Wednesday morning.

CALVERTON, NY – A taxi driver was killed in a single-car crash on Long Island Expressway Wednesday morning, Suffolk Police said.

According to police, 65-year-old Jeffrey Pogar was driving a taxi east on the LIE, just west of exit 71 in Calverton, when the car veered off the road and struck a tree around 7:35 a.m. Detectives believe Pogar may have suffered a medical event prior to the crash.

Pogar, of East Patchogue, was transported by Manorville Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead where he was pronounced dead.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
