Town Employee Starts 36-Mile Round Trip Rides to Work

Joe Maiorana of the town's community development agency rides as often as three times per week in peak season.

Spring has sprung, as they say. And so have Joe Maiorana's bike rides.

Maiorana, who works as the assistant community development project supervisor in town hall, made his first 18-mile bike ride to town hall Monday morning, the first of many more to come as the weather starts turn this spring.

The Shirley resident and former William Floyd High runner, who has completed 18 full marathons, has taken to biking in recent years to ease wear and tear on his knees, biking to work as often as three days per week during the summer season.

While he said it takes a little over an hour to get to work – at times hitting over 35 miles per hour on Route 51 in Northampton – Maiorana noted that the ride back is usually a little more challenging.

"You don't notice it really when you're in a car, but there are some pretty tough hills," he said.
