Police: 2 Rivertowns 20-Year-Olds Accused in Check Theft

Two 20-year-olds are accused of stealing checks from the Getty gas station in Dobbs Ferry and soliciting individuals to cash them, police said.
Michael Matsoukas of Hastings-on-Hudson and Aaren Burgos of Dobbs Ferry, were charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument, a class D felony; petty larceny, an A misdemeanor; and, criminal possession of stolen property, also a misdemeanor.
A 26-year-old Dobbs Ferry resident reported to Dobbs Ferry Police on Sept. 5 that Burgos allegedly asked him to deposit two checks—for $350 and $5,000—into his checking account on Aug. 29, since Burgos didn’t have a bank account of his own.

Once the funds cleared, the Dobbs Ferry resident was to give the money to Burgos. The Dobbs Ferry resident told police that he believes the suspects were also in possession of his debit card.
Though the $350 check was cashed the one for $5,000 was not since Getty put a stop on them. Police said that the two suspects allegedly stole about six checks and were successful in cashing some of them. Since then, another individual came forward saying that they were allegedly asked by the suspects to cash checks.

The two were held without bail and sent to the Westchester County Jail. This investigation is ongoing.
