Children’s Village Opens New Supportive Housing

The 12-bed unit offers housing for homeless young adults aged 18 to 24.

The Children’s Village recently partnered with Westhab to create a 12-bed facility for homeless young adults aged 18 to 24 that offers a safe place to rest their head, help with finding a job, as well as emotional support.

“This new residence fills a gap that exists in Westchester County," said Jeremy Kohomban, president and CEO of The Children’s Village. "No one is providing housing for vulnerable young adults in this age range.”

The facility, located at 102 Ash St. in Yonkers, is funded by a $323,748 Continuum of Care grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that Westchester County applied for. Continuum of Care is a non-for-profit group that operates licensed group homes, and other supportive housing.

“Westchester County remains a leader in developing a pragmatic safety-net for children and families, and with this addition, those young adults in our county that need longer-term support will have an option too," said Kohomban. "We are excited to work with Westhab on this effort, a recognized leader in providing affordable and supportive housing.”

All program participants receive employment, case management and independent living skill services. Based on their assessment, program participants may also be eligible for education assistance, drug & alcohol counseling, domestic violence support and LGBTQ specialized services.

“It has been absolutely tremendous to partner with an organization with the rich history and the youth residential expertise of The Children's Village," said Richard Nightingale, Vice President Youth and Family Services for Westhab. "Westchester should be commended for its expansive youth system of care and its array of services for adults and families.”

The Children’s Village, based in Dobbs Ferry, serves more than 10,000 at-risk children and families each year through providing shelter, street outreach for homeless and immigrant youth, foster and adoptive homes, a community center in Harlem, as well as other services.
