Rivertowns Center for Yoga Holds Community Class

The Rivertowns Center for Yoga and Health will hold the donation-based session on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. at the South Presbyterian Church, 343 Broadway in Dobbs Ferry.

The Rivertowns Center for Yoga and Health in Dobbs Ferry wants to help you find peace of mind by helping to bring calm to the battle endured from combating stress and life’s struggles.

Brahmani Liebman—who has taught yoga since 1989 and started the center about 20 years ago—is offering a new community yoga and meditation class on Thursdays from 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

“We’ve always offered donation classes,” said Liebman. “In Buddhist tradition they give their teachings freely and that really is my greatest desire. We also always make classes affordable through scholarship. We want this to be available for everyone. This is our way of giving back for being here all of these years.”

The suggested donation for Thursday’s class is $10 to $20—however Libeman asks that participants pay what they can, even if its only $1. The Rivertowns Center for Yoga and Health is housed at the South Presbyterian Church at 343 Broadway.

“We really want to be here for people and for their healing and for them to hook into a community and find the practices that can really support their life," said Liebman, who is also a reiki master and teachers other yoga instructors at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Massachusetts.

Liebman—who travels between her new home of Santa Rosa, California and Dobbs Ferry where she raised her family and has lived for 33 years—said the class is for all levels and involves mediation and learning special techniques to help you focus in an inward fashion—observing your body, thoughts and emotions.

“Come be who you are with a kindness and see what you need,” said Liebman. “We’re going to offer you ways to take care of your whole self. This is a sanctuary of time for yourself so you can go out and live your life with ease and be who you are, and be with others who are doing the same.”

The class also teaches how to warm up the body and spine in all directions, breathing techniques and classic yoga postures or “asanas.”  The relaxation period is everyone’s favorite part of class, according to Libeman.

“It’s taught in such a way that everyone can do it,” she said.

Libeman hopes people come for whatever reason they need to—whether it be to stretch their bodies, reduce stress, or be connected to a community and/or spirituality.

“What I found in this practice was really myself and how to take care of myself— mind, body, heart,” said Liebeman. “To be connected to something bigger than me, to life and to others and spirit or love—whatever you want to call it. So, I feel like whatever called you to come to class is what you’re going to get.”

The Rivertowns Center for Yoga and Health also offers donation-based community healing circles, the green yoga community and wellness talks by professionals. The center also offers beginner, mid-level, advanced and teen yoga and meditation classes.

“I just want folks to know we’re here and that coming here is a way for them to take care of themselves and perhaps find a community of others they can connect with like minds,” said Liebman. “You don’t have to have been in shape before, or finally take care of yourself then start doing it—we all have our craziness, we all have our ways we wish we were different and bring it all! We want to welcome all of ourselves.”
