High School Teams From Long Island Could Play In State Tournament

The Long Island Championships were created in 1992.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A change could give the best football teams on Long Island an even larger profile. Beginning in 2024, playoff-winning squads from Nassau and Suffolk counties may be included in the New York State Public School Athletic Association Championships, Newsday reports.

Pat Pizzarelli, who oversees Nassau County sports, told Newsday that the hope would be to have "Long Island champions go immediately to the semifinal round of the state playoffs."

The Long Island Championships were started in 1992 as a football season-ender.
