How To Conserve Electricity In The Home During Heat Wave
PSEG Long Island urges customers to make some changes to their power usage when the heat is oppressive.
UNIONDALE, NY — Amid an unbearable stretch of temperatures expected for the rest of the week, PSEG Long Island is activating its Smart Savers Thermostat Program.
The voluntary initiative helps create future savings for customers.
"Customers with smart thermostats who choose to enroll in this program are helping everyone in the service area by allowing us to reduce the peak demand on some of the hottest days," said Michael Voltz, director of energy efficiency and renewable energy for PSEG Long Island.

PSEG Long Island has been able to meet electric demand thus far, despite the heat and humidity.
More than 27,000 customers have signed up for the Smart Savers program. They may experience on-and off-cycling of their central air conditioning systems, or a small increase in temperature, between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

To limit the impact of hot weather on the system, customers are encouraged to:
- Set home thermostats or air conditioners to 78 degrees.
- Run major appliances, such as dishwashers and dishwashers in the morning or late evening to avoid peak demand.
- Set refrigerators and freezers at the most-efficient temperatures.
- Do not cool an empty house. Set your thermostat higher when you are away, or use a smart thermostat to control the temperature in your home.
