LI Man Sees People Tampering With Vehicle, Starts Shooting: PD

ELMONT, NY — An Elmont man was arrested early Monday when, after seeing some people tampering with his vehicle, he began shooting outside his home, police said.
According to Nassau County police, the incident occurred at 3:20 a.m. Officers responded to First Street in Elmont for a Shot Spotter activation, police said.
Officers located a vehicle at the scene with two bullet holes, as well as a second vehicle with a smashed window, and a neighboring fence and garbage can that also had bullet holes, police said.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that David Leary, 62, of First Street, witnessed several suspects in his driveway tampering with his vehicle, police said. He exited his home and discharged several rounds from a firearm, police said.
No injuries were reported; Leary was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon; first-degree reckless endangerment; criminal possession of a firearm; prohibited use of a firearm; and two counts of unlawful possession of certain ammunition feeding devices, police said.

He will be arraigned on Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
