Massapequa Park Bar Closed For Coronavirus Violations: State

Prohibition on Front Street had its license suspended this week after inspectors say they found people packed inside and outside the bar.

MASSAPEQUA PARK, NY — A Massapequa Park bar was shut down by the state this week for violating social distancing guidelines, according to state officials.

Prohibition, at 109 Front St., had its liquor license suspended Thursday. It is one of a growing number of establishments that are facing penalties after being accused of violating coronavirus protocols. So far, 217 establishments across the state have had their liquor licenses suspended.

"Our heightened enforcement efforts are clearly making a difference — leading to more compliance and fewer violations, which has always been the goal," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. "However, some business owners still believe these health and safety measures are optional, and we will not hesitate to hold those who recklessly put their fellow New Yorkers' health and safety at risk accountable. With the start of flu season upon us, colleges and schools opening, and localized coronavirus clusters in the state, we cannot take any chances — and we must continue to enforce the rules that helped us beat back this deadly virus."

According to the state, investigators went to the Prohibition Sept. 23 and found a crowd of about 35 people standing and drinking outside. Inside the bar, the state said investigators found another 43 patrons, including three people who were standing and listening to a live band without face masks.

The owner told investigators that he couldn't control the crowds gathering outside. The state said he chose not to stop service to mitigate the potential public health problem.

"The task force has been working diligently to stop the small number of businesses who feel they are above the law from putting the public's health and safety at risk," State Liquor Authority Chair Vincent Bradley said. "There are more good apples in New York than bad, and we want to thank those who have been adapting to these tough situations and working to keep their employees and patrons healthy."

Prohbition was not the only bar in Nassau County penalized this week. Vintage Sports Bar and Lounge in Wantagh also had its liquor license suspended for not following the social distancing guidelines, officials said.

The emergency summary suspensions are issued when the liquor authority finds the continued operation of a business threatens public health and safety. Suspension orders are served immediately and remain in effect indefinitely, with fines of up to $10,000 per violation. The maximum penalty is the permanent revocation of the license. Businesses subject to an emergency suspension are entitled to a hearing before a liquor authority judge.
