Mount Sinai South Nassau Using Advanced Technology To Treat Epilepsy
The hospital is debuting its new $2 million Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.

OCEANSIDE, NY — There's a new facility on Long Island to treat epilepsy.
Mount Sinai South Nassau has unveiled a new Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU). The two-bed, $2 million wing has advanced video-electroencephalogram (EEG) diagnostic technology and digital video monitors.
The unit also has a team of specialists, including epileptologists and neuroradiologists, nurses, social workers and EEG technicians.

Patients admitted to the EMU may need to stay awake for five days to undergo EEGs and other tests to diagnose the cause of the epileptic seizures.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 215,000 New Yorkers are living with active epilepsy; more than 35,000 of them live on Long Island.
