MINEOLA, NY — An NYPD detective pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular assault for a drunken driving crash on the Meadowbrook Parkway last year, prosecutors said.
George Moore, 40, also pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, third-degree assault and aggravated driving while intoxicated, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said.
On August 4, 2023, Moore was driving with a female passenger in a 2014 Mercedes northbound on the Meadowbrook Parkway while on his way to work in Queens, prosecutors said.

Moore was drunk and driving aggressively when he crashed into a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the center lane of the parkway, Donnelly said.
The force of the impact caused Moore’s car to crash into the center divider of the Meadowbrook and then head-on into a tree on the right shoulder before coming to a rest. As a result of the collision, Moore’s vehicle overturned and became engulfed in flames, the D.A.'s office said.

"George Moore was heavily intoxicated after a night out in Rockville Centre but nevertheless got behind the wheel of his Mercedes, speeding along the Meadowbrook State Parkway and putting countless lives at risk," Donnelly said. "The defendant hit the back of an SUV, sending his vehicle into the median where it flipped and burst into flames. As a sworn law enforcement officer, George Moore should have known the threat he was on the road that night and the damage he could cause. His selfishness and reckless disregard upended the lives of two innocent women and landed him on the wrong side of the law."
The passenger in Moore’s car suffered serious physical injury, including a fracture to her left wrist and a spinal fracture.
The driver of the Grand Cherokee suffered injuries to her lower back, left shoulder, and right knee. Moore suffered a broken pelvis, a broken arm, and a broken leg, Donnelly said.
After an extensive investigation, it was determined that Moore consumed alcohol at several bars in the Rockville Centre area before the crash, Donnelly said.
He surrendered to the New York State Police on February 28.
