Story by Julia Skrobak and Shannan Ferry:
Weddings can be a stressful time for a bride — planning the reception, picking a cake and choosing that perfect gown.
But one national organization is aiming to make the big day special for more than just the bride and groom.
Brides Against Breast Cancer held a charity wedding gown sale in Rockville Centre on April 20. The organization sold wedding gowns, donated by designers, manufacturers and retailers at up to 75 percent off the retail value. The proceeds help provide support, education and hope to those affected by breast cancer.

“It’s so hard to find a wedding dress as it is, and for some people, they dream of certain dresses that are way out of their price point,” said Shekinah MacMillan, who was volunteering at the event. “This gives them the chance to buy something that they love and then they feel like either way, they’re contributing something for a greater cause.”
The Brides Against Breast Cancer event also featured different vendors, so the brides-to-be could get their dress, cake, and flowers in one stop.
But event manager Katie Posivak said that this event is so much more than just a mini bridal expo. Posivak, who lost recently lost her uncle to cancer, wants others affected by the disease to find hope and support through this organization.
“Everybody has a story,” Posivak said. “Everybody has been affected in some way so really nobody should go through that type of experience alone.”
According to the Brides Against Breast Cancer website, the organization has received more than 50,000 wedding gown donations, giving both brides and the cancer patients a reason to celebrate.
