RVC Remembers Victims of 9/11

Ten years ago today, Rockville Centre lost 48 of its own in the largest attack on U.S. soil in history.

On Sunday, village residents and those impacted by the tragedy of Sept. 11 gathered at the recreation center for a moment of reflection and remembrance on the tenth anniversary.

“No community suffered more than Rockville Centre,” said village Mayor Francis Murray. “…but we did not just survive this tragedy, we prevailed.”

St. Agnes Monsignor William Koenig spoke about remembering those who lost loved ones, and those who remain broken from the events of that tragic day. "We lost our innocence that day," he said. "We lost that security that we were safe from attack."

Sen. Dean Skelos, R-Rockville Centre, said that as communities gather to mourn together, we shed the distinctions that separate us. "This is not a day of Democrat or Republican, black or white," he said. "This is a day Americans come together and reflect on what happened ten years ago."

J.R. Crowley, who lost her sister Maureen Olson, closed the ceremony by saying that we should remember how the victims of 9/11 lived, rather than how they died. "We must remember their lives and everything they left behind for us, not their deaths."

The village will host a larger ceremony at the 9/11 memorial on the Village green on Oct. 23.
