'Sufficient Capacity' To Handle Surge From Rising Temps: PSEG LI

Heat indices are expected to top 95 by Friday.

UNIONDALE, NY — With heat indices expected to top 95 degrees by Friday, PSEG Long Island says it has "sufficient electric capacity" to handle peak demand this week.

Hot and humid conditions will produce maximum heat index values above 90 degrees beginning tomorrow and continuing through Saturday, the National Weather Service says.

But PSEG LI "prepares for extreme weather all year round," Michael Sullivan, vice president of Electric Operations, said. "To provide customers with safe, reliable electric service, we have been upgrading equipment, carefully planning to provide sufficient electric capacity to meet peak demand, and positioning our personnel to respond effectively if needed."

The utility company urges customers to avoid wearing dark colors in extreme heat situations. Never leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles. PSEG LI also warns against strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.).

Stay in air conditioning is another tip, as cooling centers have been set up in the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town of Hempstead.
