Vehicle Stolen From 7-Eleven Parking Lot In Nassau: Police

The driver eventually fled southbound onto the Meadowbrook State Parkway, where she lost control of the vehicle, police said.

BALDWIN, NY — A Suffolk County woman was arrested after a grand larceny and assault in Baldwin, police said.

Before sunrise on Tuesday, a 61-year-old man called police to report that his 2015 Dodge Caravan had been stolen from the 7-11 parking lot on Grand Avenue, authorities said.

The victim had left his car running, with the keys in the ignition, when an unknown woman entered the driver’s side door and drove away, police said.

A short time later, Freeport police observed the vehicle on Sunrise Highway in Freeport.

Nassau County Police and Freeport police canvassed the area and witnessed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through the Village of Freeport, Baldwin and Oceanside, police said.

While fleeing, Jiyell Jones, 27, of Mastic Beach, struck a fence, a light pole and an occupied Freeport Police Department vehicle, police said.

Jones eventually fled southbound onto the Meadowbrook State Parkway, where she lost control of the vehicle. It became disabled and became engulfed in flames in the marshland, police said.

While taking Jones into custody, a Freeport police officer fell into a ditch and sustained an injury to his right knee, authorities said.

Jones is charged with third-degree grand larceny, second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, police said.

She was due to be arraigned on Wednesday, August at First District Court in Hempstead.
