Week In Review

A condensed look at this week's news.

As the new week approaches, let's look back at the stories featured on Rockville Centre Patch.

In governmental news,  New York State Sen. Dean Skelos, R-Rockville Centre, was re-elected to his 14th term on the state Senate after handily defeating George Sava with 65 percent of the vote. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola, defeated Legis. Francis Becker, R-Lynbrook, in the 4th Congressional District, and Lynbrook Mayor Brian Curran beat Democratic challenger, Dermond Thomas for the 14th Assembly District seat left vacant by the departure of Assemblyman Bob Barra. The county Legislature also approved its $2.6 billion budget.

In school news, both the girl's and boy's soccer team won their respective Class A quarterfinal matchups — the boys against New Hyde Park and the girls over North Shore. The Cyclones football team lost its last game of the season, 38-12 to West Hempstead. They ended their season 1-7.

Patch also profiled the Cyclones' Chandler Baylis, a sophomore who punts for the team, even though he has a club foot. Baylis is the Cyclones' best special teams player, averaging nearly 40 yards a punt.

The Board of Education discussed the elimination of the count guarantee at its latest meeting. The elimination will place the tax certiorari settlements from challenged commercial and residential property assessment challenges squarely on the back of the school district, when the county used to pay those settlements. The district will have to start preparing  a reserve fund to pay the settlements, which school officials say could be as much as $1.3 million.

In community news, a Brooklyn cab driver was arrested for distributing anti-Semitic notes around Rockville Centre and West Hempstead. Nine village firefighters were honored by the Town of Hempstead for saving a man who was in cardiac arrest, and we posted a photo gallery of the village's 20th annual Ragamuffin parade.
