Overheating Rooftop Air Handler Triggered Fire Alarm At Rye Neck School

The City of Rye Fire Department along with the Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department responded to the school campus.

At 1:21pm today, the City of Rye Fire Department along with the Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department responded to Rye Neck Middle/High School for a commercial fire alarm. The initial dispatch was for a pull station activation in the first-floor lobby of the Middle School.

Prior to our arrival, the building was safely evacuated.

Upon arrival, school staff notified fire department members that there was an odor of burning. The staff then directed crews to the area where the odor was strongest. Crews from both fire departments investigated the entire building to locate the source of the odor, which was a roof top air handler for th HVAC that was overheating. Fire department members and the school custodial staff were successful in isolating the unit by shutting the power off.

Units operated on scene for approximately one hour and were back into service at 2:10pm. We would
like to thank all parties involved with evacuating the occupants of the building and who assisted with the investigation.
