Teen Driver Arrested, 6 Hurt in Holiday Weekend DUI Crash: Police

High speed and alcohol contributed to the Fourth of July rollover crash on Boston Post Road, according to City of Rye police.

RYE, NY — A White Plains teen is facing charges after crashing his SUV full of other teenagers on the Sound Shore.

On July 4, the City of Rye Police Department responded to a one-car rollover accident on Boston Post Road, at the intersection of Bradford Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found the driver, Jamal Abdul Razak, of White Plains, and six passengers, ages 18-19 years old, outside the vehicle. The passengers reported only minor injuries, but all were taken by EMS to the Westchester County Medical Center for treatment.

Investigators say the SUV was traveling north on the Boston Post Road when, according to Razak, he was attempting to avoid an animal in the roadway, and struck the curb causing him to overcorrect and flip his vehicle, police said.

The vehicle, a 2010 Acura MDX, came to a stop on its roof in the southbound lane of the Boston Post Road.

Razak was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, and driving while intoxicated. He was also cited for operating in violation of restrictions (corrective lenses), refusal to submit to a breath test, open container, failure to use a designated lane, and "speed not reasonable and prudent." Officers said the 19-year-old driver displayed signs of impairment and failed the standard field sobriety testing. At the police station, Razak refused to submit to a chemical breath test, according to police.

Razak was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, and driving while intoxicated. He was also cited for operating in violation of restrictions (corrective lenses), refusal to submit to a breath test, open container, failure to use a designated lane, and "speed not reasonable and prudent."

He was processed and released with a desk appearance ticket returnable to Rye Court on July 15.
