In a statement to Patch, Tierney said, "Opioids are killing too many of our young people and I urge everyone to attend Overdose Awareness events which are occurring all across Long Island this week.."

"These deaths from lethal opioids are preventable provided we stand together with the victims and their families to come up with common sense solutions to both punish drug dealers and provide support to those caught in the throes of this deadly addiction. Combatting this epidemic is a top priority of my office," he said.

It is about acknowledging people in our communities who are affected by drugs but might go unseen in the crisis, officials said.
